Œdipe et le Sphinx (Oedipus and the Sphinx)

As he takes long strides on the steep road that leads him to Thebes, Oedipus has a strange encounter. Coiled on a rock, a lioness with the bust of a woman and the wings of a bird stretches lazily.
Suddenly, she swoops down on him.
His voice is vibrant, his gaze fixed.
“Child of Men, solve my riddle and you will live!
What being, endowed with a single voice, first has four legs in the morning, then two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?”
“You yourself have given the answer, O Sphinx”
Drunk with rage, the Sphinx rushes into the abyss and disappears forever.
